AFASIC: 08453 555577, www.afasic.org.uk - A parent-led organisation to help children and young people with speech and language impairments and their families including a helpline, publications, support groups, online message boards.

Autism London: 0845 6037954, www.autismlondon.co.uk - Support for those affected by autism and aspergers syndrome including advocacy and outreach, support meetings and parent and carers support meetings.

Contact a Family Helpline: 0808 808 3555, www.cafamily.org.uk - UK wide charity providing advice, information, support for parents of children with disabilities. Also enable parents to get in contact with other families both on a local and national level.

Essex Autistic Society: 01206 577678, www.essexautistic.org.uk - Based in Colchester offers advice and support and direction to families across Essex who are affected by autism. Website includes information about autism and also information about the Autism Alert Card free to anyone with autism which helps the police and emergency services quickly identify they are dealing with someone with autism.

IPSEA: 0800 018 4016, www.ipsea.org.uk - Registered charity offering free and independent advice to parents of children with special educational needs on local authorities legal duties to assess and provide for children with special educational needs, actions or inaction by local authorities and schools which discriminate against children with disabilities, exclusion of children with special need.

National Autistic Society: 0845 070 4004, www.nas.org.uk - Information on Autism and Aspergers including support groups, respite services, diagnosis, therapeutic approaches etc.

OAASIS (Office for Advice, Assistance, Support, & Information on Special Needs): 01590 622 880, www.oaasis.co.uk - Information on the diagnosis of a learning disability, finding a local parent support group, what support an SEN child should be getting in school, the Statutory Assessment and Statementing process, help in finding an independent special school, advice and education on all aspects of SEN.

SAFE (Supporting Asperger Families in Essex): 01621 842 734, www.aspergers.org.uk - Parent support groups which meet in the Colchester, Chelmsford, Basildon and Southend areas on a regular basis.

SNAP (Special Needs and Parents): 01277 211300, www.snapcharity.org - registered charity that helps Essex families who have children with special needs and disabilities. Aim to encourage and support parents so that they can grow in strength and knowledge and become better equipped to give positive help to their children
